The Tower and the Fool Interview

We recently had the immense pleasure of speaking with Alex Correia from The Tower and the Fool, a wonderful indie rock group from Providence, Rhode Island. Their new album, How Long, is in stores now. Check out our in-depth review here. The interview is reprinted below.
1. So you guys started out as a duo. What made you decide to add to the lineup?
Well, it was never really planned from the start. When Chris Rosenquest and I went to Mike Poorman and started tracking we had an idea to ask friends to come play various instruments on the record- Chris Capaldi, Zack Clark and later Bryan Donahue. After we tracked the EP and listened back, everyone seemed so excited at the way things turned out that we decided to try practicing and writing as a whole. How Long is actually the first set of songs that we wrote as a 6 piece band.

2. Who would you say your biggest musical influences are?
Its really hard to say. I always want to think of the bands/song writers I love the most, but I think a lot of background noise so to speak sort of shuffles its way into what actually influences me. The only thing I listen to radio wise in my truck is modern country stuff- Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, etc. I also grew more and more fond of singer songwriter stuff when I first started living with Chris Rosenquest back in 09. He introduced me to the first Bon Iver record before it even really built any hype and it hooked me really hard, especially the song RE: stacks. I’d always been a fan of 60′s/70′s era rock and folk too. Growing up I used to listen to Neil Young’s Harvest all the time after my parents let me take hold of they’re record collection and then as I got a little older I got into punk/hardcore. So, I guess over the years I’ve sort of acquired all of these musical tastes like boy scout badges sewn on a jacket.

3. Your newest album, How Long, has some tracks with electric guitars and drums, and some tracks that are acoustic. What kind of songs do you prefer playing?
For me personally I really like the more rock style tunes. I’m always a sucker for a good groove and chorus, so my two favorites are Dive Bar and My Heart Is Dead In NYC. But when Chris Rosenquest plays Who Does She Think She Is? live I absolutely love it. I guess I really enjoy the set we’ve been playing lately because it has a really good flow. We end with Die Alone which I have a blast playing too. We’ve been extending the end of the song live and Chris Capaldi solos for over 2 minutes- it’s crazy.

4. Do you have a favorite out of your songs so far?
I think my favorite one is My Heart Is Dead In NYC. I just love the way it feels and the dynamic that comes out of the song live. It just feels really natural and solid.

5. How does your writing process usually work?
Well usually Chris and I write on our own time separately and then workshop tunes together. Once we’ve sort of formed a solid foundation for the tune we’ll bring it to the guys and it just takes off from there. I think in the future though we’ll start toying with some other ideas. Everyone in the band is a great songwriter. Zac Clark just put out a new solo record which is amazing, and Bryan writes his own stuff under the name “Early Morning Blues” and his tunes are great aswell- and Chris Capaldi, well, he kills it. I saw him once at a coffee shop here in Providence before we ever met and it was great. I always say I should just quit the band because everyone else is so good! Hopefully for the next record we’ll incorporate some of the other guys tunes too.

6. Do you have anything planned yet for the future?
As of right now we’re just trying to hit the road here and there. We hopefully will be traveling a little bit in the months to come. We’ve got some great shows coming up in New England we’re excited about. Things are looking really good for us. I’m pretty stoked.

7. Anything else you’d like to say?
Just a thank you to you for being so interested in our band, and thanks to those who read this and check out our new record!
