Rutger’s University Offers Beyonce Course
A new course at Rutger’s University called “Politicizing Beyonce” will use the singer as a springboard for academic discussion. Kevin Allred is a doctoral student and lecturer in Rutger’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, and will be teaching the course. The course will use Beyonce as a lens through which to view issues such as sexual politics, race, and gender. While Allred acknowledges that he (a white male) is opening himself up to criticism by teaching about issues affecting black women, he believes that he can teach the course respectfully.
If that sounds odd to you, consider this: Georgetown University already offers a course called “The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Theodicy of Jay-Z,” taught by Michael Eric Dyson.
