Delta Spirit – “California”

Delta Spirit is an Indie Rock group based in Long Beach, California, originally from San Diego. Their debut EP, I Think I’ve Found It, came out in 2006. Their first full-length album was Ode to Sunshine, which was made available on iTunes on December 3, 2007.

The group initially received a lot of attention for their unusual instrumentation and deep lyrics. Because of that, some fans may be disappointed with their new single “California,” which reached iTunes on January 31. The instrumentation is fairly standard, driven by steady drums and a mixture of guitar riffs and arpeggios. The lyrics are repetitive, and while they are emotional, they’re less deep than in previous songs.

The repetition does not mean the song is redundant, however. The speaker of the song states over and over “I want you to move to California for yourself, I want you to find whatever your heart needs.” The repetition adds a layer of sincerity to this statement. Furthermore, the simplicity of the instrumentation allows the listener to sink into the flow of the song and be carried along to its finish. Over all, it is certainly worth checking out.
