Though a few of the tracks from this EP leaked a week ago, Cypress x Rusko is still mesmerizing. Old-school rap duo known as Cypress Hill (you might remember them from classics such as “Insane in the Brain” and “How I Could Just Kill a Man”) collaborates with dubstep-glitch artist, Rusko, to create a hypnotic, bass-filled combination of rap and electronic music.

Each song on this 5-track EP sounds very similar. However, there are a few obvious standout tracks to take note of. First and foremost, “Lez Go,” the first track on the EP, puts the listener in a daze, but quickly drags them out of it once B-Real starts spitting. “Shots Go Off” is one of those tracks that you will most likely find yourself listening to while lifting weights, hitting a punching bag, or acting irreverent towards your parents. The clicking instrumentation and bass drops in “Shots Go Off” do well to showcase Rusko’s talents.

“Can’t Keep Me Down” switches gears a bit with the inclusion of Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley. The reggae element of this track reminded me of “Rudeboy Bass” by Skrillex. If you haven’t heard “Rudeboy Bass” before, then listen to it here and I’m sure you will notice the similarities as well. The final track on Cypress x Rusko is titled “Medicated.” The sound is entrancing, and the electronic/glitch/dubstep production by Rusko is off the charts.

Overall, I am very impressed with what Cypress Hill and Rusko have put together here. Although the songs all sound vaguely similar, it surely doesn’t take away from the intensity of the music. Each song is meant to bring hype, and each one of them does so. Cypress Hill’s sweet rhymes over Rusko’s absolutely filthy beats are a beautiful blend. It’s good to hear such different styled musicians collaborating to create a new sound/ niche in the music industry.
