Beck – “Looking for a Sign”

Active since 1988, Beck has managed to stay musically relevant due to his great talent and his willingness to experiment. He’s produced music for other groups, done a number of collaborations, and even been heard on movie soundtracks such as Scott Pilgrim and more recently, Jeff, Who Lives at Home. His track “Looking for a Sign,” which appeared in Jeff, was released as a single on iTunes on March 20, 2012, and is available for $0.99.

The track begins immediately with acoustic instrumentation, drums, and a lovely prominent harmonica. The harmonica is the first thing you’ll notice, and it helps set the tone for the song. Beck’s voice kicks in with a little bit of grit to it, but he soon shows the versatility of his voice with his capable falsetto.

The song is soothing enough to lose yourself in it easily, but it’s worth paying attention to the lyrics. They’ve got a heavy sadness to them that fits perfectly with the gently rolling accompaniment. If you’d like to listen to the song before you buy it, you can find it below.
